The P. muticus King Baboon Tarantula is a robust, ground-dwelling species prized for its impressive size and striking appearance. Native to East Africa, this tarantula features dark coloration with distinctive urticating hairs and a potent venom—handle with respect and appropriate caution. Housing: Provide a terrestrial enclosure with 4–6 inches of substrate (coconut husk or peat moss) to accommodate burrowing behavior. A 10-gallon tank works well. Maintain temperatures between 72–76°F with moderate humidity (60–70%). Ensure secure ventilation and a water dish. Feeding: Offer appropriately-sized prey (crickets, roaches, other insects) every 7–10 days for juveniles; adults may feed less frequently. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours. Care Notes: This species is defensive and fast-moving—not recommended for beginners. Females can live 12–15 years; males typically 3–4 years. Minimal handling is advised. Provide hiding spots and monitor for signs of stress or illness. Ensure proper enclosure security to prevent escapes.
