Oniscus asellus, commonly known as the skirted isopod, is a hardy terrestrial crustacean ideal for bioactive terrariums and as live food for reptiles. These dark-colored isopods feature distinctive lateral flaps that give them their "skirted" appearance. They thrive in moist environments with plenty of hiding spots—cork bark, leaf litter, and wood pieces work well. Feed a varied diet of vegetables, dried leaves, and protein sources. Maintain temperatures between 65–75°F and provide adequate ventilation to prevent mold. Skirted isopods breed readily in proper conditions, making them excellent for establishing sustainable cleanup crews in gecko enclosures or as a renewable feeder colony.
