The Mexican Painted Red-leg (Brachypelma emilia) is a striking, docile tarantula ideal for intermediate keepers. This species features distinctive red-orange leg markings and a dark body, making it a visually stunning addition to any collection.
Native to Mexico, B. emilia thrives in a semi-arid terrestrial setup with moderate humidity (60–70%). Provide a 10-gallon enclosure with 4–6 inches of substrate for burrowing, a hide, and a shallow water dish. Temperatures should remain between 70–80°F.
Feed juveniles small crickets or roaches weekly; adults require larger prey every 7–10 days. This species has a calm temperament and rarely bites, though they may kick urticating hairs when threatened. Females can live 12–15 years, while males typically live 3–6 years.
Handle with care and minimal frequency to reduce stress. Ensure proper ventilation and avoid excessive moisture. With proper care, B. emilia becomes a rewarding, long-lived pet.
