The Davus pentaloris, commonly known as the Guatemalan Tiger Rump, is a striking and robust tarantula species prized by both beginners and experienced keepers. This New World tarantula features distinctive orange-red markings on its abdomen, creating a bold contrast against its dark body. Davus pentaloris are relatively docile and slow-growing, making them an excellent choice for those new to tarantula keeping. They thrive in warm, humid conditions with temperatures between 75–80°F and moderate humidity levels. Provide a well-ventilated enclosure with at least 5 gallons of substrate—a mix of coconut husk and peat moss works well—allowing them to burrow naturally. These tarantulas are opportunistic hunters that feed on appropriately-sized insects such as crickets and roaches. Juveniles may eat once weekly, while adults typically feed every 7–10 days. Provide fresh water via a water dish or by misting the enclosure regularly. Davus pentaloris have a moderate lifespan, with females living 12–15 years and males 3–6 years. They are generally calm and rarely bite, though they may kick urticating hairs if threatened. Handle with care and respect their space for a rewarding long-term pet experience.
