Grammostola pulchra, the Brazilian Black tarantula, is a robust and docile species renowned for its deep, iridescent black coloration and calm temperament as adults. Native to Brazil, this ground-dwelling tarantula thrives in warm, humid conditions and typically reaches a leg span of 5-6 inches at maturity.
Known for its longevity and reliability as a beginner-friendly species, the Brazilian Black is slow-growing and relatively long-lived, with females often surviving 15+ years in captivity. They are opportunistic hunters that prefer a substrate deep enough for burrowing and appreciate stable temperatures between 75-80°F with moderate humidity.
While generally docile, they are a bit defensive when threatened and will kick urticating hairs rather than bite. Their dark, velvety appearance and calm nature make them popular among keepers seeking an attractive, low-maintenance pet tarantula. Feeding typically occurs every 7-10 days on appropriately-sized insects.
