The Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula (Grammostola rosea) is a docile, hardy species ideal for both beginners and experienced keepers. Known for their striking reddish coloration and calm temperament, these spiders are relatively low-maintenance and long-lived, with females reaching 12–15 years in captivity.
Housing requires a 10-gallon enclosure with 2–3 inches of substrate for burrowing. Maintain temperatures between 70–80°F and humidity around 60–70%. Provide a water dish and hide spots. Feed juveniles weekly with appropriately-sized insects; adults every 7–10 days. Handle minimally to reduce stress, though they tolerate gentle interaction better than many tarantula species.
These spiders are generally docile but possess urticating hairs and fangs—exercise caution during feeding and handling. Molting is normal and can last weeks; avoid disturbance during this period. With proper care, Grammostola rosea makes a rewarding, long-term pet for dedicated keepers seeking an engaging arachnid companion.
