The Cameroon Red Baboon tarantula (Hysterocrates gigas) is a striking, fast-growing species prized by experienced keepers for its vibrant coloration and robust temperament. Native to West Africa, this large baboon tarantula features deep red-brown body coloring with distinctive red leg banding.
Care Requirements: Provide an enclosure with 20+ gallons of space and 6–8 inches of substrate for burrowing. Maintain temperatures between 75–80°F with moderate humidity (60–70%). Feed appropriately-sized insects (crickets, roaches) every 7–10 days; juveniles grow rapidly and may require frequent feeding. Provide a water dish and minimal décor to reduce stress.
Temperament & Handling: Fast and defensive, this species is not recommended for beginners. They possess potent venom and will bite if threatened. Observe from a distance rather than handling. Females can live 12–15 years; males 3–4 years.
Ideal for experienced keepers seeking an active, visually impressive tarantula with straightforward husbandry needs.
