The Phormictopus auratus, commonly known as the Cuban Bronze tarantula, is a striking and robust species prized by both beginner and experienced keepers. Native to Cuba, this terrestrial tarantula displays beautiful bronze-gold coloration that deepens with age, making it a visually impressive addition to any collection. Cuban Bronze tarantulas are known for their docile temperament and relatively slow growth rate, reaching a leg span of 5–6 inches at maturity. They thrive in warm, humid conditions with temperatures between 75–80°F and moderate humidity levels. Provide a well-ventilated enclosure with 4–6 inches of substrate for burrowing, as they are semi-fossorial and enjoy creating their own retreats. These tarantulas are low-maintenance feeders, accepting appropriately-sized insects such as crickets and roaches. Juveniles require feeding every 5–7 days, while adults can be fed weekly or bi-weekly. Ensure fresh water is always available via a water dish or regular misting. The Cuban Bronze is an excellent choice for keepers seeking a calm, hardy species with minimal care demands. With proper husbandry, they can live 12+ years in captivity, offering long-term companionship and natural beauty.
