The Phormingochilus hatihati, commonly known as the Bornean Purple Earth-tiger, is a striking terrestrial tarantula prized for its deep purple coloration and robust build. Native to Borneo, this species is moderately fast-growing and reaches a leg span of approximately 5–6 inches at maturity.
This tarantula thrives in a humid, tropical environment with temperatures between 75–82°F and humidity levels around 75–85%. Provide a deep substrate (4–6 inches) of coconut husk or peat moss to accommodate its burrowing nature. A hide or cork bark shelter is essential for security. Feed juveniles weekly with appropriately-sized insects; adults require feeding every 7–10 days. Water should be available via a shallow dish or regular misting of the enclosure.
Phormingochilus hatihati is known for its defensive temperament and fast movements, making it better suited for experienced keepers. Handling is not recommended. With proper care, this species can live 12–15 years in captivity, making it a long-term commitment for dedicated hobbyists.
